Canada vs US Singles Final

It was a battle of two neighbouring countries at the World
Candlepin Championships in Halifax yesterday. Two time winner
Chris Hollett of Canada and Dick Duncan of the US went toe to
toe for the coventent singles title. Only four pins seperated
the two bowlers as Dick Duncan bowled a 130 to defeat Chris
Hollett's 126. First place received total prize money of $2500,
with Hollett picking up $1500 for second.

A record 132 bowlers started out the day, having first to go
through the qualifiy round, with the top 32 moving on to the
knockout round. By the end of a long day, only the Canadian
and American remained.

The team competition gets underway today. In a tribute to the
year of the Vets, four local war hero's will throw out the first
ball. Round robin plays goes through until Friday, with the
playoffs starting that afternoon. The championship game will
be on Saturday afternoon.

MacLaughlin's Truck and Trailer of Halifax are the current and
three time defending champs.

Round 1

Park Place Lanes 2 had the high single (725) and triple (1961).
One team had a "scoring" problem - they signed the sheet, with
a 1 pin difference in the total, and it cost them a point (then
found 1 pin).

Doug Blackler had a triple strike in the 7/8/9, for a 154.
And, my site can now be updated after each round :)

Round 2

McLaughlin's is the only 16/0 team (Chris Hollett didn't start the
first 2 games, so he threw a 177 in the 3rd).

Maria's sub had the team single at 681, while Park Place 2 had the
high triple again (1957).

Round 3

Three time defending champs, MacLaughlin's Truck and Trailer,
averaging 638, are definately in top form after going 8 and 1
on the first day of competition. They find themselves tied for
first in the Coca-Cola division with Maine Heat, averaging 649.

The only points that MacLaughlin's lost, were to Charlie
Slaunwhite and Town Delivery - which also happened to be the
only game they've won. However, they are the lucky team -
they've already won 2 50/50 draws!

Park Place from New Hampshire is leading the Ramanda Hotel
section, and is averaging 647.

High average for the day was Nate Healy from Maine Heat with a
145 average for 9 strings. John Zappi of Massachusetts and
Halifax's own Chris Hollett both had the high single of the day
with a 177. Chris is yesterday's singles runner up. Round
robin play continues today at Halifax Fairlanes.

Round 8

Tim Carrigan gave some comic relief - while going down for a pin, he
slipped and whacked his face. A little blood, but he was OK. What wasn't
OK was when MacLaughlin's won the first 2 from Park Place 1, but lost the
last one....and they lost pinfall on the strength of a mark in the 10th.

Those 4 points were costly because Maine Heat took 6. However, all eyes
